Very rare and unusual
Lot 2017
Honorius, with Theodosius II, 395-423. Exagium Solidi (Bronze, 16x15 mm, 4.14 g), 408-423. Crowned, diademed and draped facing busts of Honorius, on the left, and Theodosius II, smaller and on the right; between them above, Victory standing facing, crowning the emperors. Rev. Blank. Bendall -. CPAI -. MAH 360 var. = Pondera 4231 var. (cross instead of Victory). Very rare. Minor edge chipping on the sheet metal, otherwise, good very fine.

This and the following lot 2018 are of considerably cruder style and fabric than lots 2012 and 2015-2016 above, which perhaps lead MAH to date their examples to the 6th century. However, the cliché or sheet metal exagia are clearly linked to the struck exagia of the late 4th and very early 5th centuries and the crude fabric of some of the pieces may point towards a decentralized production in more than one mint
